Retaking Of Xudafarin Bridge Heralds President’s Grandmaster Move
The victorious Azerbaijani army’s advance across the occupied Karabakh lands is expanding with new territories coming under official Baku’s control.
On October 18, the audacious servicemen of the Azerbaijani army in a video clip reported to President Ilham Aliyev about erecting the national flag on the Xudafarin bridge that links the divided lands.
"The Azerbaijani armed forces have hoisted the Azerbaijani flag on the ancient Xudafarin bridge," President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan said in a tweet.
Along with Cabrayil District, the left-hand side of the bridge in this district came under the control of Armenia in 1993. The video clip shot by a group of servicemen to report to Azerbaijani Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev about the event will undoubtedly go down in history of the liberation war of Azerbaijan.
The Azerbaijani tricolor over the Xudafarin Bridge and a military report of the Azerbaijani servicemen to their Supreme Commander-in-Chief “The Xudafarin bridge is freed from the invaders!” signaled the strong will of the Azerbaijani state to end 30-year long occupation.
Azerbaijan is not only liberating own lands but also returning its history, its historical heritage. The Xudafarin bridges were mentioned in chronicles as early as the VII century, even the most skeptical researchers attribute them to the XII-XIII centuries.
Armies and trade caravans of the Great Silk Road walked along them, engineers and builders still admire their design and try to unravel the secret of the cement mortar mixed with milk, which have held the stones together, and the "technical solutions" that made it possible to build the pillars of the bridge in the stormy and the wayward Aras River, so much so that these bridges really stood for centuries.
Azerbaijan is regaining control over the previously occupied section of its border with Iran. There is hardly a need to explain in detail what this means - a border that is outside the legal space and control of the legal authorities, and how the restoration of legal control over the border, where Azerbaijani border guards are now standing, affects peace, stability and security in the region.
However, there is one more side to the issue. In the short video clip, behind the shoulders of the Azerbaijani soldiers, one can also see the dam of the future Xudafarin hydroelectric power station - the same one, the construction of which aroused serious concerns in its time.
Perhaps, it should be recalled that the talk about the construction of the Xudafarin hydroelectric power station began during the Soviet period. Its initial project provided for the flooding of the Xudafarin and Siniq Korpu bridges but it triggered a public protest in Soviet Azerbaijan and the the project was revised. Further events, that’s the collapse of the USSR, the Armenian aggression, the occupation of Cabrayil District postponed the construction.
However, in February 2016, Tehran saw the signing and ratification of a new agreement by the Azerbaijani parliament between Azerbaijan and Iran on the construction of Xudafarin and Qiz Qalasi hydroelectric complexes on the border River Araz.
This agreement and even more so the construction of waterworks caused a storm in the opposition and near opposition circles.
"The expansion of cooperation between Iran and Armenia", "the strengthening of communications between Iran and the Armenian occupants" - the crackling epithets beat on the nerves and did not always make it possible to understand what was actually signed in Tehran.
Today, of course, one can recall that already in the preamble of this agreement support for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan was expressed, the need to fulfill four UN Security Council resolutions on Karabakh.
However, most importantly, this agreement was signed taking into account the factors that its critics did not always understand: global processes and the growing influence of Azerbaijan in the region and in the world. In addition, most importantly, a policy verified with pinpoint accuracy, demonstrated by Azerbaijan and President Ilham Aliyev.
Where everything was taken into account and military construction, and the development of the geopolitical situation around the South Caucasus, and much more. Moreover, most importantly, there was confidence: the occupation of the Azerbaijani lands cannot last forever. The Araz valley will be cleared of the occupiers, and this will happen much sooner than many regular critics and whiners imagine.
Now Azerbaijan, under the leadership of its Supreme Commander-in-Chief, confidently and smartly removes all possible questions and doubts in connection with the Xudafarin hydroelectric power station. The Armenian invaders were kicked out of the vicinity of the bridge and the waterworks.
Azerbaijan is restoring its control over an important strategic facility - the dam of a new hydroelectric power station, which already opens up new opportunities for the restoration of the lands ravaged by war and occupation in the Araz valley, and for the development of cooperation with Iran, and for solving many specific problems, from electricity supply to irrigation of agricultural lands, for which, in fact, the hydroelectric power station was built.
Moreover, the Xudafarin bridges are now becoming a symbol of the military valor of the Azerbaijan Army.
